Ungrounded outlets or grounding not located: what it is, how serious, what it costs

Grounding, « mise à la terre » in a French report, connects the home’s electrical system to the earth, through a rod driven into the ground or through the metal water service pipe. Every three-prong outlet is tied to it by a wire. If a live wire touches a metal part by accident, the current takes that path instead of you, and the breaker trips.

Reports mention it in two ways: “grounding connection not located” (the inspector did not see where it connects) and “ungrounded outlets” (the tester shows the ground wire is missing).

An ungrounded outlet raises the risk of electric shock, and surge protector power bars plugged into it no longer do their job. In analyses, it is usually “To check”: only an electrician can tell whether the problem affects one outlet or a whole circuit.

A common trap: when the plumbing was redone in plastic (PEX), the grounding that ran through the water pipe may have been cut without anyone noticing.

Having an electrician evaluate the grounding system: $200 to $500. Having the ungrounded wiring evaluated: $250 to $600.

The fix depends on what they find: restoring a connection is often simple; rewiring old circuits costs much more, and in some cases GFCI protection is allowed instead. I do not price the fix before the electrician’s opinion.

These are ballpark figures for Quebec, to be confirmed with quotes.

1. Where is the grounding connection, and is it in good condition?
2. How many outlets are ungrounded, and are they on the same circuits?
3. Was the plumbing redone in plastic?

Ask the seller how old the wiring is and for invoices of electrical work: your insurer will ask for them too.

Does your report mention grounding? Upload it: in five minutes, I tell you what comes first, what to have checked and what to ask the seller.

No. A three-prong outlet may have been installed on an old circuit with no ground wire. Only a tester, like the inspector’s, shows it.
